Finally the Malawi Electoral Commission has a website!

Friday, May 08, 2009

After many people (including myself) complained about the lack of an official Malawi Electoral Commisson website, finally it seems our pleas have been heard. I remember to have written a post:"Why should the Malawi Electoral Commission have a website?".

But now, we can access the Malawi Electoral Commission website at

Congratulations to the Malawi Electoral Commission for this initiative. Infact I have already verified my voter registration details on the website. Very wonderful indeed!

A welcome development, to be sure!

Now, as someone who is relatively new to Malawi's electoral system, I have to wonder: is one's registration information (for example, the Voter Registration Number) meant to be kept private? I ask because this information is very, very public on the website.

I randomly chose a date - May 8th 1980 - and a common surname (Banda) and performed a search. I was then provided with the registration number, full name, gender, region, district, constituency, and even the registration centre for each person born on that date named Banda (there were 7 results).

This raises some questions on privacy. I don't know how much the average Malawian might mind, but someone who values his or her privacy - or perhaps ran away from their previous home for some reason - could be found by anyone with access to their most basic personal information.

All in all, I'm still very glad for the development...but wary of the potential abuse of this resource.

Very very true John! I guess it was an oversight on the part of the Electoral Commission. This information was supposed to be private. I hope someone does not use this information somewhere to start 'manufacturing' replica ID cards.
