Facebook in Kiswahili is a great idea!

Monday, June 15, 2009

Just read on BBC news website that a Kiswahili version of Facebook has been released! Honestly speaking, I am thrilled. Long at last, African languages are also gaining prominence as communication medium in the cyber world. I do not know KiSwahili, but this idea is just great! At least to me... What about you?

What we have to do now is translate Facebook into Chichewa. Here's what has to happen:

Everyone who's interested in becoming a Chichewa translator on Facebook has to add the official "Translations" application on facebook.

After you've done this, reply to my discussion thread on the application's page titled "Chichewa: Let's get this started!" - make it clear that you are a Chichewa/English speaker, and that you are willing to get involved with the Chichewa translations. The goal is make Facebook's people aware that there is a large enough community of Chichewa translators to justify starting up translations in Chichewa.

Contact all of your Chichewa-speaking friends on Facebook and tell them to do the same, if they're interested. Pass the word around.

Hopefully then, Facebook will open up translation on the Chichewa language!
